There are many FTP programs available to help you upload files to your website. You may encounter difficulties regardless of the program you choose.
Here are some common FTP troubleshooting tips:
Double-check your settings. A simple typing mistake could keep you from connecting. Check your Welcome email for the settings you need to create an FTP connection with your primary domain.

Some FTP programs will assume the prefix in the address, so when filling in the FTP address field, you may need to use ftp.mydomain.com or ftp://mydomain.com instead of just mydomain.com.
When an FTP program asks you to indicate the folder your files should be placed in, remember that the first part should be public_html for your primary domain. If you have tried everything else, try both “public_html/” and “/public_html”. If you are uploading directly to an addon domain, you should not have a folder listed.
Keep in mind that HostPapa’s servers may lock you out for 1 hour if you have more than five failed login attempts. This is a security measure to prevent fraudulent activity.
Are you using a custom FTP account?
When creating a new FTP account in cPanel, avoid using special characters or punctuation in the fields into which you enter data.
Once you’ve created an FTP account, the username in your FTP application will be formatted similar to an email address. Example: If you created “myftp” as the username, the FTP account username will be email@example.com.
