How to set up shipping

How to create a new Delivery Method

To deliver to your customers, you can create various delivery methods that they can use. These methods can also be linked to a logistics provider like FedEx etc.

Creating a new Delivery Method

To create a new delivery method, click on Settings > Shipping. You will see a list of shipping methods that are already added here.

Click on Add to add a new shipping method.

In the pop up, choose your delivery method. If you don’t want to connect to a logistics provider, you can use User Defined delivery method. Linking to a logistics provider gives you the advantage of real time shipping costs and franked labels.

In the Type field, choose the type to determine how the delivery costs will be calculated.

Enter the name for the delivery method in the Name field. The name has to be unique for every delivery method. Select Add to add the delivery method.

If you linked to a logistics provider in step 3, click on Complete Delivery Method. You will then work through a few steps to add this. Save the changes when you are done with it.

Click on Settings to define settings for this delivery method. With the exception of free delivery, you can modify everything else. This is because in the case of free delivery, no delivery costs are incurred.

Click on General to define general settings for this delivery method.

1) Internal ID – The internal reference name for your delivery method. This is not visible to your customers.

2) Type – This is the type which specifies how the delivery costs are calculated.

3) Visible in Shop – Use this to show or hide this particular delivery method from your customers.

4) Default Selection – Use this to specify if this should be the standard delivery method for your customers.

5) Allow for all products – If you want to allow this delivery method for all products, use this feature.

6) Region – If your shop supports this feature, use this to limit the delivery option to customers from a specific region.

7) Name in Shop – This is the name of the Delivery method as visible to the customers while checking out.

8) Description – Use this to inform your customers about the delivery method as this will show up during checkout to the customers.

9) Logo – Determine a logo for this delivery method and it will show up during the checkout process for the users.

Save the changes and see it reflected in your store.

Determining Delivery Costs

While fixing delivery costs for your shop, the general rule of thumb is that it should be clear and easy to understand for your users.

You have to decide the delivery costs for each individual delivery method. When you do this, you do not have to use the same delivery costs that your delivery agents invoice you.

For example, instead of showing your actual delivery costs, it would be better to find an average cost. This is usually more convenient and better understood by customers.

Do not forget to factor in extra costs like packaging costs when deciding on the delivery cost.

Delivery Costs – Type

The type of a delivery method determines how the delivery costs can be calculated.

Free Delivery – These orders are generally free of delivery charges.

Fixed Price – These orders have a fixed delivery fee.

Exemption Limit – These orders allow for a free delivery when the total order goes above a specified value.

Shopping Basket Total – Based on the total order value, adjust your delivery cost.

Weight of the products in the cart – Your delivery costs are calculated depending on the weight of the products.

Number of products in the cart  – Delivery costs are calculated based on the number of the products in the cart.

Modifying Delivery Costs

After creating a delivery method and choosing its type, click on the method the delivery cost of which you wish to set.

Depending on the type of delivery method, set your price accordingly

Fixed Price

  1. Enter the delivery price (net) in the field.
  2. Click on Save to save the price.

Exemption Limit

  1. Enter the delivery price for orders where the limit for free delivery has not been reached.
  2. In the Free shipping from field, enter the cost above which the users can get exemption.
  3. Choose Free Shipping from Products or Products, Coupons. This refers to if the price should be calculated from total of products OR total of products and coupons.
  4. Click on Save to save the changes.

Shopping Cart Total

  1.  Determine under Price of the basket refers whether the order value should include only products or should also include coupons.
  2. In the table at bottom, enter the delivery costs for various order values.

In the line $0.00, enter the multiplier and the base price for the first limit (e.g. $50).

The multiplier determines the variable amount of the delivery price and the base price determines the constant amount.

The delivery price is then calculated based on the following formula:

Delivery costs = basket price x multiplier + base price

For example:

You enter a multiplier of 0.5 and a base price of $3 for the order value range of $0 to $20. If a customer places an order with an order value of $5, they must pay $5.50 in addition to the $5 cost of the order.

  1. Save the changes.

  2. You will find a new line added to the bottom of the table. In the column Price of the shopping cart to enter the next limit. Repeat step 2 again and save changes.

  3. Repeat 1-4 steps if you want to add a few more limits.

Weight of the Products in the Cart

  1. Choose a value for the Free shipping from field. This field is for you to inform your customers about the price above which you offer free shipping.

  2. At the top of the table, choose the weight unit.

  3. In the table at the bottom, enter the delivery costs for various weight categories.

For the range 0 to unlimited, enter the multiplier and the base price for the first limit (e.g. 5 kg).

The multiplier determines the variable amount of the delivery price and the basic price determines the constant amount.

The delivery costs are then calculated according to the following formula.

Delivery costs = weight x multiplier + base price

For example: You enter a multiplier of $2 per kg and a base price of $5 for the weight range of 0 to 5 kg.

If a customer places an order with a weight of 3 kg, they must pay $11 in delivery costs.

Delivery costs = 3 x 2 + 5= $11

  1. Save the changes.

  2. You will now notice a new line has been added at the bottom of the table. In the column Quantity From, enter the value of the next limit.

  3. In the same line, enter a multiplier and base price. Save the changes to add the new value.

  4. If you want to define a maximum weight for this delivery method, enter the value in Maximum Weight and save the changes.

If a customer’s order exceeds the maximum weight, then this delivery option will not be shown to the customer.

Points to note:

  1. If you are offering a delivery method of this type, ensure that you enter the delivery weight of each product.

  2. If a customer places a product in the shopping basket for which the weight has not been entered, the delivery price will not increase. If the customer only places products without any weight indication in the shopping cart, the delivery costs incurred will be the base price for the smallest unit of weight without any additional surcharges.

Number of products in the cart

  1. If you have free shipping above a certain monetary amount, enter it in the field titled Free Shipping From.
  2. You will find a table at the bottom of the Settings page to specify delivery costs.

Enter the multiplier and the base price. The multiplier determines the variable amount of the delivery cost.

By default, Quantity from will be zero and Quantity to will be unlimited. You will not be able to adjust these settings on this first line. However, once you save the base settings, a new row appears, which asks you to enter a quantity in a field called Piece(s).

Whatever value you enter, the settings in the first row will stop being applied once the quantity reaches that number, and the settings in the second row will be applied instead.

For example, if you enter a value of “3” in Piece(s) and then save the settings, the first row will say Quantity from is zero and Quantity to is < 3. That means for 0, 1, or 2 pieces the settings in the first row will apply. For 3 or more pieces, the settings in the second row apply.

The base price is the constant fixed price.

You can calculate the delivery cost with this formula.

Delivery Cost = Product Quantity x Multiplier + Base Price

For example:

Your base price is $5 and the multiplier is $2. If your customer ordered 3 products, then the cost will be:

Delivery Cost = 3 * 2 + 5 = $11

  1. Save the changes to update the values.
  2. You will now find a new line added at the bottom of the table. Enter the value in Quantity From field for a new limit.
  3. In the same line enter a multiplier and base price. These values then apply from the specified limit to unlimited.
  4. Save the changes.
